Analysis of the film My Aunt Is Here in the context of the birth and women’s health nursing course within the framework of reproductive health, gender, and violence concepts

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyze the film My Aunt Is Here in order to increase the awareness of nursing students about reproductive health, gender, and violence, and to contribute to the learning process. Methods: The research was conducted using document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods. The film My Aunt Is Here, selected as a visual document, was examined using qualitative content analysis in line with the themes of reproductive health, gender, and violence. The film was selected using the purposeful sampling method because it contained scenes directly related to these themes. The film, which was watched at least 3 times by the researcher, was analyzed by focusing on scenes that were appropriate for the study topic. Results: In the film, in addition to the scenes where the concepts of gender equality and equity are discussed, the cases where the reproductive rights violations caused by these concepts (fundamental rights such as the right to life, equality, freedom, information, and education) are clearly observed. In addition, the film includes examples of physical, verbal, emotional, and sexual violence; scenes of violence committed by not only men against women but also women against women are noteworthy. Conclusion: It is thought that the film can be a good learning method to increase nursing students’ awareness of reproductive health, gender, and violence and to contribute to the learning process. New studies should be planned to evaluate this effect.
