Abstract

OpenAlex · English

This study explores the integration of Additive Manufacturing (AM) with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML). While AM enables complex geometries, material efficiency, and design flexibility, it faces challenges such as poor surface quality, printing defects, limited material capabilities, and slow production speeds. Addressing these issues is crucial for AM to reach its full potential. AI and ML offer promising solutions through process optimization, monitoring, defect detection, material property prediction, and generative design. Advanced sensor systems combined with ML algorithms enable early detection of defects, allowing timely interventions to reduce waste and improve quality. This study provides a comprehensive of AI and ML applications in AM, highlights key advancements, and outlines future research. The findings reveal that AI-driven technologies significantly enhance efficiency and quality control in AM. Interdisciplinary collaboration, data infrastructure, and improved AI models are essential for maximizing the impact of AI-integrated AM in Industry 4.0.
