Abstract
This study aimed to identify ruderal plants growing naturally on the Akdeniz University campus and to evaluate their potential therapeutic and ecological roles. A twelve-month field survey conducted in 2023 identified 161 ruderal taxa, including 18 subspecies and 6 varieties. Literature screening revealed that 74 species have been studied for anticancer properties, 64 for anti-inflammatory activities, and 97 for antioxidant capacity, while 49 species have not yet been examined for any of these biological effects. Ruderal plants exhibit remarkable tolerance to anthropogenic stress and heavy metal pollution, suggesting their potential in phytoremediation and biomonitoring. In addition, several taxa possess ethnobotanical and medicinal importance. The findings highlight the ecological adaptability and bioactive potential of ruderal vegetation under urban pressure. The study contributes to understanding how these resilient species may support sustainable urban ecosystems and provide valuable phytochemical resources for future pharmacological research.
