To develop a quality clay suspension is one of the most important subject in rheology. In this study, it has been reported that utilize a novel viscosifier additive material, named as pectin extracted from waste apple peel in bentonite dispersions and compared with widely used viscosifier materials (carboxymethyl cellulose and polyanionic cellulose). The main aim of this study is to enable the use of pectin derived from organic waste in bentonite suspensions and to develop a new viscosifier material for spud-type drilling muds. According to the results of this study it is determined that pectin can be used as additive material for spud muds. The materials were characterized by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) method, X-ray diffraction (XRD) method, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and particle size distribution (PSD) method. In the experiments, the bentonite dispersions were prepared and pectin, CMC and PAC were added to different ratios (wt. 0.05–0.50%). Apparent viscosity (AV), plastic viscosity (PV), yield point (YP), 10 sec. and 10 min. gel strength (GS), static filtration and thixotropy (STI and TI) analysis were applied. In addition, rheological model evaluation was made with least squares method using Robertson-Stiff (RS) flow model. The results showed that all of the dispersions can be modeled with Robertson-Stiff flow model as successfully. In general, results showed that pectin is more effective than CMC LV, however it is not good as PAC LV on bentonite dispersions in terms of rheological and thixotropic properties.
