Abstract
English (OpenAlex)
In this study, the records by Xenophon, who commanded and at the same time witnessed the historic return of Hellen mercenaries in the late 5th century BC are reassessed. These records are a kind of diary about the return route of the army. The information recorded during this journey to reach the continent of Greece, the motherland, forms a basis for the general situation of the region in 401 BC, the topographical descriptions and nomenclatures about the Eastern Anatolian Region and details about people groups living there. For this reason, the place names within historical geography of the region, inhabitants, and settlement types on the route constitute a fundamental basis for our work within the scope of the ancient sources from the primary source. In addition, there are different views and suggestions that researchers have put forward based on the topography of the region in relation to the route that the army was pursuing during the march. In this study, also referring to current studies, the possibility of the return route between Kentrites and the Teleboas Rivers is discussed in the geographical and archaeological aspects in the light of the new findings.
