Objective: Less is known about Kir6.1 ion channel opener minoxidil on the pathogenesis of epilepsy. This experimental study aimed to investigate the electrophysiological and histopathological effects of Kir6.1 ion channel opener Minoxidil on penicillin-induced epilepsy model in rats.Materials and Methods: The present study comprised a total of 42 male Wistar rats. The rats were randomly divided into six groups: control (n=7), minox (n=7), Epilepsy (n=7), Eminox (n=7), DIA (n=7), and DMSO (n=7). Intracranial administration of penicillin was performed in the study groups to induce experimental epilepsy. Epileptiform activities were recorded in all animals and subsequently compared prospectively between the experimental groups.Results: The values of spike-wave frequency and amplitude were significantly higher in the epilepsy group than in control, DMSO, and Minox groups. Conversely, staining differences were observed between groups in histopathological findings, but this was not significant enough to be evaluated statistically.Conclusion: Our study demonstrated that minoxidil administration had no any significant electrophysiological and histopathological effects on triggering epilepsy. Nevertheless, future research should concentrate on well-designed studies with larger sample sizes to acquire more robust and generalisable evidence.
