The planning of public spaces through a gender-sensitive lens has become a crucial dimension of contemporary urban studies, particularly within the framework of women-friendly city initiatives. This article explores the relationship between gender equality and public space planning, emphasizing how urban environments can either reproduce or mitigate gender-based inequalities. It outlines the theoretical background of gender-sensitive planning and identifies the challenges women face in accessing, using, and feeling safe in public spaces. The paper highlights that experiences of insecurity, exclusion, or limited access are not incidental but rather rooted in structural dynamics of urban design and governance. A review of recent studies shows that factors such as lighting, surveillance, accessibility, and the availability of inclusive green spaces significantly influence women’s perceptions of safety and their participation in public life. In addition, the article discusses the role of participatory planning and community engagement in creating equitable urban environments. By integrating gender equality into spatial planning, cities can improve social inclusion, promote ecological sustainability, and enhance the overall quality of urban life. The analysis concludes that gender-sensitive planning is not only a matter of social justice but also a prerequisite for sustainable development and the realization of resilient and inclusive cities.
