Nutritional Status and Quality of Life in Older Nursing Home Residents: A Descriptive Cross-Sectional Analysis

This study aimed to examine the relationship between nutritional status and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among older adults living in nursing homes. A descriptive cross-sectional design was applied, including 147 residents aged 65 years and over from two nursing homes in Ankara, Türkiye. Nutritional status was evaluated using the Mini Nutritional Assessment (MNA), while HRQoL was assessed with the EQ-5D-5L instrument, providing both index and Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) scores. The mean age of participants was 78.36 years. Based on MNA classification, 2.7% were malnourished, 37.4% were at risk of malnutrition, and 59.9% had normal nutritional status. The average EQ-5D-5L index score was 0.77, and the mean VAS score was 70.7. Partial correlation analyses adjusted for age and sex revealed significant positive associations between MNA scores and both EQ-5D-5L index (r = 0.387, p < 0.001) and VAS scores (r = 0.293, p < 0.001). The results indicate that better nutritional status is independently associated with improved perceived quality of life among nursing home residents. These results highlight the importance of integrated nutritional and geriatric care strategies in supporting functional health and overall well-being in older populations.
