Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to develop a scale to measure women’s awareness and concern levels about Human Papillomavirus (HPV). MATERIALS and METHODS: The data of this methodological study were collected between December 2022 and July 2023 at the 16th Family Health Center affiliated with the Eyüp District Health Directorate in the European side of Istanbul. A total of 270 women were included for exploratory factor analysis, 400 women for confirmatory factor analysis, and 30 women for test-retest application. IBM Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) program version 24.0 and AMOS 26.0 software packages were used for data analysis. RESULTS: The scale consists of 19 items, with a Cronbach’s Alpha value of 0.905. There was a significant differentiation in all items of the scale (p<0.05), and discriminative power was achieved in the lower and upper 27% percentile groups. The Kaiser-Mayer-Olkin (KMO) value of the scale was calculated as 0.879, indicating suitability for principal component analysis. Similarly, the results of Bartlett’s Test (χ²=2538.404, p=0.000) showed that the data were interrelated and suitable for factor analysis. The scale items were distributed into 3 factors, accounting for a total variance of 62.929%. The first factor was named “concern about health”, the second factor was “concern about exclusion”, and the third factor was “awareness status”. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, it was determined that the Human Papillomavirus Awareness and Concern Level Scale (HPV-ACLS) is a valid and reliable measurement tool for women living in the Turkish society. Keywords: HPV awareness; HPV testing; cervical cancer; cervical screening; HPV concern; scale development
