Abstract

English (OpenAlex)

Waiting areas in hospital buildings are spaces where patients and visitors often experience feelings of anxiety and uncertainty. This situation leads to increased psychological sensitivity among individuals, shaped by their experiences in the hospital. In this context, hospital waiting areas are not only functional spaces for temporary waiting, but also areas that can affect users' emotional states and must be carefully designed from a psychological and aesthetic perspective.A welldesigned interior space has the potential to create a positive spatial experience by reducing user stress. This study systematically addresses the design process for a hospital waiting area under four main headings: spatial analysis, user needs analysis, design development, and implementation.During the design development User-Orıented Based On Gestalt Prıncıples: An Implementatıon In A Hospıtal Waıtıng AreaThe Journal of Academic Social Science Yıl:13, Sayı: 171, Aralık 2025, s. 280-294 281 phase, Gestalt theory was used to create a user-centered, legible, and holistic spatial concept based on the principles of figure-ground relationship, proximity, similarity, completion, continuity, and simplicity. In line with these principles, a design approach centered on user experience and spatial perception was adopted, and design decisions were shaped accordingly. As a result, this study highlights the guiding effect of geometric forms in spatial organization and the applicability of Gestalt theory in different stages of interior design, drawing attention to the importance of perception-based design approaches in healthcare facilities. In this regard, the functional distribution around the central core has been addressed holistically, encompassing design components such as spatial organization, guidance systems, seating units, dividing elements, and visual communication, aiming to create a high-quality interior space in both aesthetics and functionality.
