FWCI

FWCI is an article-level metric; 1.0 is world average, 1.50 means about 50% more citations than average.

Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI) is an output-level performance indicator common in the Scopus/SciVal ecosystem. It compares citations received by a publication with the world average for the same year, field, and similar document type. FWCI 1.00 means world average; 1.50 implies about 50% more citations than that average. Instead of racing medicine against mathematics on raw citation counts, you get a contextualized ratio.

FWCI is not a journal Impact Factor. A paper in a Q1 journal can post a low FWCI; a paper in a niche venue can post a high one. Some institutional “highly cited output” definitions therefore prefer FWCI to JIF—but results depend on database, window, and field mapping. Early papers can show noisy FWCI before citations accumulate.

Not every Turkish guideline asks for FWCI; it appears more in international review, project reporting, and university analytics. When reporting, state year, database, and the output set. Do not confuse FWCI with altmetrics: one is citation-based normalized impact; the other measures social/digital attention.

Practically, FWCI helps narrate the impact of selected papers on a CV; it should not be a sole hiring switch. The citation and Scopus entries explain the world FWCI rests on. Manipulative citation rings can distort metrics—inspect content and network structure when values look extreme.

When using altmetrics as evidence, keep a timestamped record or permanent link—scores move over time and never replace scholarly quality judgments alone.

When reporting citation counts, put field, article age, and database side by side so you neither inflate nor undersell the signal.
