A Visual-Supported Dictation Application Developed Specifically for Hearing-Impaired University Students: Hi-Moji

Visual supports and technology significantly impact the education of hearing-impaired students. While dictation applications that convert speech to text are widely used in classrooms, research on them is quite limited. This study explores the post-implementation experiences of hearing-impaired university students who used Hi-Moji, a visually supported dictation application, during one semester of a Graphic Design course. Prior to the research phase, Hi-Moji was developed as a field-specific assistive tool integrating real-time text transcription with semantic visual cues to support comprehension in terminology-intensive instruction. Opinions of 10 deaf university students were collected. At the end of the study, participants reported that Hi-Moji helped them understand topics more quickly, retain more information permanently, and solve communication problems more effectively. They were delighted and found the app beneficial. The results highlight the pedagogical and accessibility potential of visually supported dictation technologies in higher education and provide design-oriented insights for future assistive technology development for hearing-impaired learners.
