Reliability and validity of the Turkish version of the Duke-Vanderbilt Misophonia Screening Questionnaire: a new tool for misophonia assessment

The aim of this study was to conduct a Turkish validity and reliability study of the DVMSQ, which was developed to screen for misophonia and evaluate its symptoms. This study also aimed to determine the variables affecting the prevalence and severity of misophonia. Three hundred individuals aged between 18 and 65 years with clinically normal hearing were included in the study. The participants were asked to complete the Duke-Vanderbilt Misophonia Screening Questionnaire (DVMSQ), which includes 18 screening questions measured on a 5-point Likert scale. Psychometric indicators for the construct validity of the DVMSQ were obtained through confirmatory factor analysis. The Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency coefficient and item-total correlation were examined to assess the reliability of the questionnaire. A total of 144 (48%) of the 300 people included in the study suffered from misophonia. The factor loadings of the Turkish DVMSQ were between 0.46 and 0.87. Confirmatory factor analysis revealed that the Turkish DVMSQ was consistent with the structure of the original questionnaire, consisting of 18 items and two subdimensions. The item total score correlations of the questionnaire varied between 0.46 and 0.77. The Cronbach’s alpha internal consistency coefficient for the 18-item version of the questionnaire was 0.91. The DVMSQ, adapted into Turkish, has a high validity and reliability level and supports the screen of misophonia.
