During the present experimental work, the spontaneous-combustion liability of the lignite samples with 74 and 500 μm particle sizes maintained under three different storing conditions (deep freezer, nitrogen tank, and oven) in a laboratory environment for a period of 16 weeks were determined. The method of crossing-point temperature (CPT) was employed in order to ascertain the spontaneous-combustion tendency of the coals. According to the results obtained, ignition temperatures of the coals stored in the deep freezer (–25°C) have higher values compared to the other samples with different storing conditions while their risk indices for self-heating are lower. Additionally, it was also outlined with this work that the particle size of the coals is effective on the course of self-ignition of coals. It was determined that the particle size of the coal has an impact on the self-heating capacity of the coal.
