Traumatic Vitreous Hemorrhage

Vitreous hemorrhage is the most frequent finding in ocular trauma. In cases with obscured fundus visualization associated pathologies (retinal tear, choroidal detachment, intraocular foreign body, retinal detachment, etc.) should be evaluated by ultrasonography and vitreous motility should be monitored even if the retina is attached. A decrease in vitreous motility points to the development of proliferative vitreoretinopathy and requires early vitrectomy. There is no evidence-based data related to the timing of vitrectomy. However, the patients’ characteristics and the experience of the surgeon determine the process of decision making. Vitrectomy in certain planes and the use of adjunctive equipment (for example viscoelastic) can make it possible to decrease the chance of iatrogenic damage.
