Revitalisation of Tabhirhouse “Tebhirhane” Building in Uskudar

Purpose: The main purpose and objective of this study is to examine the architectural features of the physical environments and structures of the small-scale disinfection buildings, and practices that were carried out and to investigate the project to realize the revitalization of such a structure that is still standing today. In addition, the other aim of this study is to investigate what measures and practices have been taken and implemented in the past years, during Ottoman Empirement, to prevent and control epidemics. As the pandemic still continues to exist as a threat in the world. Theoretical Reference: According to the investigations, it is learned that the Ottoman Government took precautions against infectious diseases by constructing ‘’tabhirhouses ‘’(disinfection buildings) and carrying out significant studies on diseases such as cholera and plague. In addition to the cholera epidemic in 1835, the plague danger and epidemic were on the agenda. Method: Before selecting the research topic, it was taken into consideration to do preliminary reading about the field. In order to be informed about the research conducted in the field, it was thought to provide an idea in determining the subject for the study. According to the literature review, in addition to determining the subject of the study, information is also obtained on how the subject should be handled. On-site examination of the building, researching the history of the building from internet, and libraries, archival sources and on-site, obtaining the works for the construction of the revitalization project by visiting the relevant Directorate and exchanging ideas on restoration project. Results and conclusion: These works constituted the necessary steps for the execution of the study.It is noticed that ,since the historical building that in question has lost its function in the past, the re-functional project was accepted and it was aimed to transform it into a health museum and cultural house. At this stage, care was taken not to change the main structure, material properties and plan scheme of the historical building. Implications of research: Today, when epidemics are still on the agenda, it is important that such exemplary buildings are revitalized and in the public eye this is announced to a wide circle, even in writing. . In this regard, all professional groups, especially scientists and architects engaged in design and restoration, and local administrators have a duty. Originality/ Value: This article is of unique value in terms of the preservation of related to health and treatment structures which were built during the Ottoman Empire, especially small-scale precautionary structures between neighborhoods for the prevention of pandemic diseases, and the transmission of their stories to future generations
