Factors affecting the decision to “age in place”in post- retirement

Impending retirement sets in motion a chain of other events. Many people leave their territory after retiring, while others have expressed their intention to stay or age in place. The purpose of this study is to explore the factors that affect the decision to stay in the same location after retirement as well as to attach importance to the public services that are in the location where the retirees will live. Participants of this study consisted of employees aged 50 and above at the Hacettepe University in Ankara, Turkey. The sample size was determined using a random sampling method (n=422). More than half (59.2%) of the sample were men, while 40.8% were women. Most (85.1%) of the sample were married. More than half of the participants had a university or higher degree (63.8%), and 31.5% were high school graduates. More than half (50.2%) of the sample's monthly household incomes were above the poverty line, and 49.1% of the sample's monthly household income was between the starvation line and the poverty line. Results of the means' comparisons showed significant differences in the decision to stay in a location after retirement based on gender, level of education, an individual's assessment of his/her income adequacy and health, duration of living in Ankara and in the present dwelling, and the frequency of relocation. Moreover, comparisons of the means indicated significant differences in the ability to attach importance to the public services in the location where the impending retirees would live based on gender and the frequency of relocation.
