Geleneksel Kuyumculuk Tekniklerinden Kalem İşi Tekniğinin 3 Boyutlu Modelleme ve Uygulaması

This study examined the feasibility of simulating and producing the ‘kalem işi’ technique one of the fundamental surface decoration techniques of traditional Turkish jewellery making in a digital environment using contemporary three-dimensional (3D) modelling software. The study employed descriptive and experimental methods from qualitative research approaches; within this framework, two distinct pendant ends featuring traditional Turkish motifs were produced from silver using traditional hand tools and computer-aided design (CAD) methods. The primary aim of the study is to demonstrate the adaptation of the ‘kalem işi’ technique a traditional craft to the digital age, thereby integrating historical knowledge with contemporary practices and making an academic contribution to the sustainability of cultural heritage. The production processes were analysed comparatively based on specific criteria such as duration, manufacturability (repeatability), surface finish and designer/craftsman intervention. The experimental findings revealed that 3D modelling technologies offer a near-zero margin of error the ability to visualise designs prior to production, and flexible revision options; thus, they have the potential to facilitate time management during the design process and prevent potential material wastage. It was concluded that digitalisation is not a threat that eliminates traditional crafts; on the contrary, it is a supportive tool that optimises production processes and offers designers new forms of expression to meet personalised demands.
