The effect of proactive personality on professional commitment through career mindfulness in tour guidance students

This study examines the mediating role of career mindfulness (CM) in the relationship between proactive personality (PP) and professional commitment (PC) among Turkish undergraduate students aiming for a career in tour guiding. Despite the importance of PP and mindfulness in career success, previous studies have not tested this relationship using the CM scale. Data collected from 592 students via online and face-to-face surveys between 1 November and 20 December 2023 were analyzed using structural equation modelling within the mediation framework. The findings revealed that PP did not have a direct significant effect on PC; however, PP positively predicted CM, and CM significantly increased PC. The results indicate that the effect of personality tendencies on professional attitudes can be mediated by career-focused self-regulation processes, such as CM, in the context of tour guiding. By integrating CM into the career development literature, the study contributes to personality–attitude relationships in a mechanism-based manner and generates implications for education and industry practice.
