Unio terminalis (Bivalvia: Unionidae)’ in üreme biyolojisi üzerine gözlemler

In the present study some observations were made on the reproductive biology of Unio terminalis (Bourguignat, 1852; Bivalvia: Unionidae) from River Çine (Aydın, Turkey). Egg packages that are typically seen in the breeding process of freshwater mussels were laid by the adults in May and November at 21–25 Cº water temperature under the laboratory conditions. The egg packages were contained eggs or/and glochidia . The mean egg diameter was ~226 μm and no correlation was found with the broodstck size (R 2 <0.01). At the same time larvae size did not differ with the broodstck size (p>0.1); the mean height of the glochidia were ~186 μm. Density of the glochidia were 30±6 mm -2 . The openning closing movement of the glochidial valves was observed; the fastest frequency was recorded as 1.2 sec -1 and larvae were able to keep this frequency up to 15 seconds. But this frequency was recorded as less than 1 movement per minute for many cases with live glochidia. After releasing, glochidia were found only at the gills of Andinoacara sp. among 3 different fish species.
