In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of zoledronic acid, which is a potent bisphosphonate on oxidative stress markers in rabbit kidney tissue. As an oxidative stress marker, malondialdehyde, nitric oxide, glutathione were studied. Rabbits were given daily 100 μg/kg zoledronic acid for 28 days (n = 7) in the study group. Control group (n = 7) rabbits were fed ad libitum for the same period. Malondialdehyde and nitric oxide levels were statistically significantly higher in the zoledronic acid group (p <0.0001). However, glutathione activity was statistically significantly lower (p <0.0001) compared to the control. Rabbit kidney tissues were examined histopathologically. The histopathological changes between the groups were not significantly different. In conclusion, we showed that zoledronic acid may induce oxidative stress by reducing antioxidant levels in rabbit kidney tissues. Further human studies are needed to clarify the adverse effects of zoledronic acid. Key words: Zoledronic acid, oxidative stress, malondialdehyde, glutathione, nitric oxide.
