Examining Colonial Legacies Through Steel Tracks: The Railway as a Symbolic Device in Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake

This article explores the motif of railways in Jhumpa Lahiri's The Namesake (2003) as a crucial site for examining the enduring impacts of British colonialism and postcolonial identity formation in India.Although existing studies extensively discuss Lahiri's representation of immigration, assimilation, and cultural hybridity, the specific symbolism of the railway as a colonial legacy remains underexplored.By drawing significantly from Ian Kerr's historical analysis, which foregrounds railways as emblematic of both colonial modernity and postcolonial disparity, the present study critically investigates how Lahiri employs trains to articulate spatial and temporal dislocations central to the postcolonial condition.Railways, introduced during British rule as instruments of integration, paradoxically reinforced socioeconomic divisions and communal identities.Frantz Fanon's conceptual framework, highlighting the colonial world as rigidly compartmentalized, provides a theoretical lens through which Lahiri's narrative is analyzed, particularly in episodes such as Ashoke Ganguli's transformative train accident and the family's subsequent journeys across India.Lahiri's vivid depiction of train compartments symbolizes enduring social hierarchies inherited from colonial rule, reflecting Fanon's notions of colonial spatial segregation.Ultimately, this paper argues that Lahiri's nuanced use of railway imagery underscores the complexities of postcolonial identity, simultaneously capturing colonial aspirations of progress and exposing the violence and fragmentation embedded within such legacies.Thus, by highlighting the railway motif, this analysis enriches the scholarly dialogue surrounding Lahiri's literary portrayal of colonial histories and their lasting implications for contemporary Indian society.
