Scamander: From Trojan War to end of Antiquity It’s Mythology and Iconography

Scamander, the largest river of the Troad, flows from Mount Ida past Troy and into the Hellespont. Large number of ancient settlements (prehistoric, classical, Byzantine) are located near its banks. Scanmander was also personified as the River-God of the region. According to Homer, Scamander attacks Achilles to help the Trojans. Since he was an important figure in the topography and mythology of the Trojan War, Scamander was often depicted in ancient art and on coins.
