HIGHLIGHTS Bacterial respiratory disease can occur in shelter dogs on occasion. Empirical antimicrobial drug selection may be performed based on etiologic consideration. Cefovecin sodium seems suitable for the empirical treatment of shelter dogs. Cefovecin should only be used on a case-by-case basis.
