Özet

İngilizce (OpenAlex)

Objective: This study aims to systematically evaluate the social impacts of mass psychogenic illness (MPI), analyze its consequences at the societal level, and propose practical solutions for managing such events. Methods: The research was conducted as a systematic review in accordance with PRISMA guidelines. Literature published between 2004 and 2024 was searched using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, employing keywords like "mass psychogenic illness," "mass hysteria," and "social impact." Eleven studies meeting the inclusion criteria were analyzed. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using Joanna Briggs Institute checklists. Results: The societal impacts of MPI were categorized as follows: effects on education, healthcare services and resource management, media and misinformation, public trust and perceptions, economic burden and iatrogenic effects, and implications for public health policies. These impacts were examined in detail within each category. Conclusion: MPI extends beyond individual effects, exerting widespread influences on education, healthcare, economy, and social trust. The dissemination of exaggerated and inaccurate information through media and social media amplifies symptom spread. Enhancing societies’ ability to manage such crises requires interdisciplinary collaboration across education, media, healthcare systems, and policymaking. Effective public health policies, widespread psychosocial support services, and accurate information dissemination are critical tools for mitigating the social impacts of MPI.
