Aim: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is one of the most commonly used surgical modality for treatment of kidney stones. In the current study, we aimed to assess factors influencing success rate of PCNL.Material and method: Current study enrolled one hundred ninety nine patients (n= 199) who underwent PCNL in our clinic between January 2008 and May 2011. Localization and size of stone(s) were assessed in all patients with intravenous pyelography (IVP) and non-contrasted computerized tomography (CT). Stone samples were taken from all patients and they were examined with X-Ray Diffraction method. In the current study, among all factors influencing success rate of PCNL operations, surgical experience, stone load, number of attempts, history of previous operations and type of stone were assessed. Results: Mean age of patients was 56 years (range: 1475 years). PCNL was performed in 85 patients due to stone in right kidney and in 114 patients due to stone in left kidney. None of patients underwent bilateral PCNL. Mean operation period was 91.6 ±27 minutes, while mean hospitalization period was 4.53 ±1.69 days. Mean duration of nephrostomy was 2.13 ±0.59 days.Considering influence of surgical experience on success, the difference was statistically significant between two groups (P=0.013). It is found that higher number of attempts is, lower the success rate is (P
