University Students’ Experiences and Thoughts on Dating Violence: A Qualitative Study

Objective: This study was conducted to comprehensively analyze nursing students' experiences and thoughts on dating violence.Method: The phenomenological study was conducted with nursing students at a university between February and December 2023. 18 students participated in the study.Results: As a result of the study evaluated with content analysis; students' statements were addressed under five themes. The themes were determined as; (1) Perceptions of dating violence, (2) Thoughts on the causes of dating violence, (3) Thoughts on disturbing behaviors in the relationship, (4) Experiences, thoughts and feelings about dating violence, and (5) Thoughts of individuals experiencing dating violence regarding marriage with their partners.Conclusion: Students perceive dating violence as physical, emotional and sexual violence and think that it is due to family, social environment or individual reasons. Most students do not consider marrying their partner with whom they experienced dating violence and their awareness levels are high. This study emphasizes the need for more education on dating violence. In this regard, nurses play an extremely important role in raising awareness of individuals and carrying out work to protect them.
