Özet
Due to social studies mainly focusing on teaching young students the civic virtues required to tackle current democratic crises, the adults who created such crises have often been overlooked. While schools have not completely excluded families from education, this sole focus on students has hindered the development of the comprehensive and social changes required to combat inequalities, which is known as the ‘civic empowerment gap’. In this paper, author(s) attempt to establish a philosophical basis for the expansion of the social studies curriculum to include families. It is thought that the current deficiency in the curriculum is one of the sources of democratic crises, and such a revision would overcome the ‘civic empowerment gap’ within social studies, improve the way that democracy is taught, and ‘enhance’ families. The overall aim of this work is therefore to persuade social studies educators to shape the curriculum in a familystudent-centred manner.
